FoodTechIndonesia provides poultry management training for farmers through innovative blended-learning program

FoodTechIndonesia

The Netherlands and Indonesia work together to strengthen the Indonesian poultry sector. The FoodTechIndonesia consortium comprises leading complementary (non-competitive) parties from various steps in the Dutch poultry value chain, which enables to provide Indonesian companies integrated solutions.

FoodTechIndonesia has been initiated by Larive International and its Indonesia-based affiliate Clarity Research. The consortium includes Aeres Training Centre International, Royal De Heus, DSM Nutritional Products, Hato, Kanters Special Products, Marel Poultry, Mavitec, Moba, Royal Pas Reform, Trouw Nutrition and Van Aarsen.

Demonstration broiler house

Recently, the consortium upgraded an open-house broiler farm in Sleman, Central Java to a semi-closed farmhouse by integrating Dutch technologies and solutions. This upgrade aims to increase the level of biosecurity and animal welfare, reduces farm operating risks and improves animal and financial performance. The upgraded broiler house, at the premises of PT. Januputra Sejahtera farm, will function as a demonstration location for broiler farmers from the Yogyakarta region. The facility showcases that investments in Dutch products and solutions are commercially attractive and applicable to the Indonesian needs.

Hybrid broiler management training program

As an addition to the demonstration activities, broiler management training programs for local farmers are provided. Implementation of the training programs is led by Aeres Training Centre International, De Heus Indonesia and Larive International and its Indonesia-based affiliate Clarity Research. As the global pandemic poses international travel restrictions, the cluster decided to implement a new knowledge transfer method in the form of a blended-learning (virtual-physical) training program. In this method, selected Indonesian ‘Master Trainers’ receive intensive virtual training from Aeres which prepares them to physically transfer knowledge, training materials and best practices to Indonesian broiler farmers.

In February 2021, a selected group of Master Trainers, including staff from the demonstration farm, De Heus Indonesia and Clarity Research, received the virtual training. This training, including detailed e-learning modules, provided them with the knowledge, tools, materials and didactic skills required to successfully train the local broiler farmers. From March 2021 onwards, multiple physical and practical training programs will be provided to independent broiler farmers in Central Java. The objective of these practical programs is to increase the knowledge level of farm managers (and indirectly their employees), focusing on farm equipment and biosecurity (poultry housing criteria, water supply, heating, light and ventilation) and applied management (brooding management, monitoring, feed, litter and transport management). Furthermore, attention is paid to create awareness about food safety, animal welfare and environmental topics.

Layer demonstration and training

Similar to the broiler demonstration and training activities, the consortium will upgrade a layer farm in Central Java and provide hybrid layer management training programs from March 2021 onwards.
